Description
Art & Mindfulness sessions are creative exercises designed to reduce stress, improve empathy and emotional regulation, and improve self-awareness. You will be learning healthy coping skills to deal with the everyday stress of life.
This method was first developed in 2016 by artist, and board-certified art therapist, Kelly Darke. In 2020 Darke further developed the Art & Mindfulness method to work seamlessly with virtual groups. The experience is a combination of art therapy, neuroscience, coaching, and self-compassion. You will learn to use art as way to understand your emotions and develop strategies for stronger self-awareness.
Art & Mindfulness sessions are structured to follow a specific timeline, so please arrive on time to ensure you get the full introduction and explanation of the session topic. Each session begins with an introduction of the facilitator and setting the intention, followed by silent art making, and ending with discussion to deepen our understanding.
To avoid distractions during the art making time the facilitator will not start over for people who arrive late. If you arrive late, you will be given a written description in the chat and be able to ask questions in the chat.
Art & Mindfulness is a powerful process that engages our creativity and takes advantage of neuroplasticity allowing us to make positive changes in our thoughts and behaviors.
The benefits of the Art & Mindfulness process does not stop when the session is over! You have learned a skill that you can use on your own as part of your daily personal development, self-care, routine. Set aside 5 to 15 minutes for yourself each day to work on the skill learned in the session. Similar to the effects of meditation, practicing these Art & Mindfulness skills daily will help strengthen your emotional regulation, lower stress, and improve self-awareness.
This works whether or not you think you’re “good at art”. The process is what’s most important not the finished product.
There is no right or wrong way to do this and you do not need any special art skills.
All sessions are inclusive and non-judgmental.
Each session requires only a piece of paper and a pencil. However, you are welcome to use any other supplies you like, such as: colored pencils, pens, markers, highlighters, or paint. (Supplies are not included in virtual sessions).
Start prioritizing your health and living a calmer, more creative life!
